School Renovations and Face Lifts
12/05 - Nina (1st year student) started by painting our main classroom a soothing green. The room also got a much-needed feng shui treatment!
08/06 - Nina painted the herb room, the library, the clinic rooms, and the small classroom. Her careful selection of colors has enhanced all of those rooms! Thank you, Nina!
08/06 - Complete Library Renovation
In a series of four stages over Summer Break, our Library was given a long-overdue face lift! We now have linoleum floors, many new bookcases, more books, and a much more user-friendly workspace for students and faculty. This effort was coordinated by Pat Perez (Director of Operations) and Mei-Jen S (Librarian and 1st year student). MAHALO NUI LOA to everyone (too many to name here!) who helped with this enormous project!!

03/08/06 - Nurses from Illinois Weslayan University Visit
Here is an excerpt from an email from the head of this program:
For nearly 24 years, Illinois Wesleyan University School of Nursing has offered a travel course to Hawaii ; this course is as an elective, transcultural nursing/health course offered, in recent years, biannually. The focus of this course is on the cultures of Asian-Pacific Island peoples past to present with a special emphasis on health care and health-related issues. In addition, related topics center on traditional healing practices other than those in the westernized, scientific, allopathic health care system. As a professor in the School of Nursing , I have the opportunity to teach and lead this travel course.
For the first time in May 2000, our travel group had an opportunity to visit your college with the assistance of Dr. Angela Longo. In May 2002, Dr. Robert Smith and Academic Dean Jivan Collins facilitated a visit and Dr. Marie Sutton and Judy Rinehart, L.Ac. provided invaluable assistance in May 2004.
The tour group consists of Illinois Wesleyan University 24 students and two escorts (myself and a faculty colleague, Sharie Metcalfe, PhD, RN). Of the 24 students, 18 are undergraduate nursing majors, and the remaining six are pursuing study in other academic fields such as biology, psychology, sociology, and the arts; five of these six are pre-med.
I was hoping that we might also arrange to meet with your or some of your faculty as well as some students. In May 2000, we met with some students; your students were able to share an enthusiasm and insight as well as demonstrate their learning. In May 2004, we met with faculty who discussed and demonstrated acupuncture and Qi Gong. My students found this quite interesting as most have never encountered anyone who practices any of the techniques learned by your students. The majority of my students are from the central part of the mainland that is dominated by the allopathic care system; at most, many claim to have only "heard of" some modalities. As a requirement of the course, each student investigates one alternative method, some of which are from traditional Chinese medicine. Therefore, some general objectives for this experience might be that students, after the visit, would be able to:
1. examine various modalities encompassed in traditional Chinese medicine.
2. compare assessment, diagnosis, and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine with that of the allopathic system.
3. comprehend the educational pathways and quality of education in preparing practitioners of Chinese medicine.
Sincerely,
Connie M. Dennis, PhD, RN
