About Us - Accreditation
The Traditional Chinese Medical College of Hawaii offers an intensive, 3 and 2/3 calendar-year (11 trimester) program, awarding its graduates a Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine. Each year is composed of three 15-week trimesters, designed to progressively develop the student’s understanding of Oriental medicine, and to expand his/her abilities and competency as a healer. A new class is admitted each September, with class size limited to a maximum of 20 students. Students may also be admitted at the beginning of any trimester if they demonstrate adequate knowledge and skill to merge with the continuing class through transfer credit, challenge examination, or favorable assessment by the Academic Dean.
The course of study at TCMCH is designed to systematically develop the students' understanding of Oriental medicine, providing an understanding of the basis of the effectiveness of Oriental medicine. Students learn to go beyond managing symptoms to treating the causes of illnesses, and restoring balance, harmony and health through the use of acupuncture, herbs, diet, bodywork, and Qi Gong (energy enhancing exercises). Students learn the fundamentals of Oriental medicine at the same time that they learn clinical skills. They learn basic and clinical Western medical sciences that enable them to work effectively with their Western medical colleagues. We provide a thorough training in traditional Oriental medicine.
Clinical training takes place in the TCMCH Teaching Clinic. In the Clinic, students are supervised by a licensed Oriental medicine practitioner and participate in all aspects of diagnosis, acupuncture treatment, and herbal formulation and preparation.
Graduates of the College are qualified to sit for the National Commission for Certification of Acupuncturists (NCCAOM) Examination administered by the Hawaii Board of Acupuncture. Of TCMCH graduates who have taken the Hawaii State Licensing Examination, 98% have passed (the national average is 80%).
